Re: XP USB Drivers

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Wrong newgroup. If you want to write your own USB drivers and are having
problems or want some help on the design, this is the correct newsgroup.

Reinstall Windows XP SP3 and see if it works. Send off the drive to a data
recovery company such as Ontrack if it doesn't work. Move up to Windows 7
where there may be changes to the USB stack if you compare it to XP.
Replace the motherboard if the USB 2 controller(s) have quit. Call Bill
again, but you do know he has retired?

I have a problem that is kicking my butt. I have tried searching the net
and troubleshooting with Bill Gates.

Some time ago I bought a Western Digital External Hard Drive (EHD)
(160GB).
It has external AC power and is connected to the computer via USB. When
the
Western Digital is connected to a machine, it recognizes a Compact Flash
Drive and 5 In 1 Drive (which are part of the hard drive. I do have to
power up the disk portion of the device. So 2 (the EHD is actually 3
devices) devices normally get recognized with the hard drive portion off

I going to describe what I have done or tried to do to fix the problem.

Originally the EHD did work with the Desktop.

The desktop machine will not recognize the device - period. It sits like
a
lump. I have tried using port that the printer is connected to and the
printer get recognized. I have used the printer on both the front ports
and
both ports work. When I connect the External Hard Drive, nothing - no
"bad
device", "unknown device", nothing. I have powered the desktop machine
down
and back up with the device in place - no joy. Since all front ports
recognize the printer I really cannot see where that would be a problem
and
the device used to be recognized with the Desk Top powered up. I have
powered the hard drive down and then back up - nothing. By the way, I
have
connect the hard drive to the front with/without the printer connected.
Device manager says that all is working correctly. It will recognize the
printer and the Thumb Drive, it give -zero- acknowledgement of the EHD. I
have powered the desk top down and back up with the device connected

Now, I take the hard drive (powered up) and connect it to the lap top.
Sometimes the lap top recognizes it, sometimes no. I pull the power plug
on
the hard drive and reconnect it and bingo, it comes up. When it was
connected to the desk top I did the same thing - no joy. I considered USB
cables and power cables, but they work with the lap top, just not with the
desk top.

Now there is a strange thing that I noted with the desk top. Perhaps this
is related, perhaps not. I have a 2.0 thumb drive. If I connect it to
the
laptop (front port w/printer connected) it comes up with a message stating
that I have a High Speed device connected to a low speed port. If I
disconnect the printer from the front port and connect the thumb drive it
works like a champ or if I uninstall the device and scan for new devices
it
finds it and installs it OK,

It just appears that there is some disconnect between the desk top and the
Western Digital.

MoBo is a Soyo Dragon KT400 Dragon Ultra

Now someone suggested uninstall/reinstalling the USB drivers. If someone
has a solution would appreciate it. In any case, can someone tell me
where
to obtain the USB drivers and how to uninstall/reinstall - I really
believe
that the problem is there. It is my understanding that since I am at
least
at SP1 that the drivers are Microsoft's. Tried Bill at home but no answer

Thanks in advance
