Re: Windows wants to re-install for each new USB port connected

are you sure windows is using the serial number? when you state this

Windows ask to re-install drivers each time we change the device AND each time we change it of >USB port

this shouldl not be happening when you change ports. windows can track teh device across ports. asking to reinstall drivers on device change with a serial number is expected behavior. windows knows the identity of the device in this case and knows a new device is plugged in. compare this to a device w/out a serial number and you change devices but keep the port the same. windows has no idea a different device is plugged in b/c the device does not have identity that can be tracked

In my case, if we put put a "Device Instance ID" (serial number) in USB devices, Windows ask to re-install drivers each time we change the device AND each time we change it of USB port. If there is no ID, Windows only ask to re-install drivers each time we change it of USB port.
It's a little bit better because our users havn't admin rigths. At the first install (under admin rigths), we plug our device on each USB port.

We have a compound USB product with (1) a hub, (2) a Usb/serial converter (prolific) and (3) a Smartcard reader.
The problem is that we can't remove the ID from the (3). An dthix is the only device for wich Windows ask for the driver.
Is it possible to make Windows ignore this ID ?
