Re: Disable Device is persisted, but where?

Hi Eliyas, Don,

Eliyas, thanks for clarification regarding your post not being related to managed newsgroups.

It's a long story why I'm trying to find the persistent registry values; I'm troubleshooting a device that's playing up on Vista, it would be helpful to view the state information before Windows starts up.

I'm also concerned about lack of registry documentation for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. For years Microsoft have been trying to pretend the registry doesn't exist, and that everything you need is just a few clicks of the mouse, but look at Microsoft's own KB and you'll see hundreds of articles that begin "This article contains information about editing the registry".

If I posted on the Group Policy newsgroup asking which keys were modified by a policy, I'd get a detailed answer, but they could easily say "use the GP tools, you don't need to know WHERE the changes are made". Of course we do!

We need EVERY registry key documented for Vista and Win2008.

The other absurd idea was that with .NET you no longer need to know what's in the registry because it was going to copy linux where you have config files stored with the app, of course that didn't last long and most .NET classes are just wrappers round COM Components and this means they have a registry dependency anyway.

Gerry, I'm not trying to be rude. My apologies if it sounded like that. Yes I'm a Microsoft employee. I don't work for product support division so I'm not obligated to respond to managed newsgroup.
