with no com port. instead i use a usb_rs232 adapter which the device
manager installs as com4. so i use bootcfg.exe to add '/debug' and 'com4' to
boot.ini correctly. however when i reboot, my laptop hangs. the only way i
can get the laptop back is to boot to a dos prompt and put boot.ini back to
the way it was.

For future reference, a better way to do this is to add an ADDITIONAL line
to boot.ini, and add the /debug lines on that. That way, you can choose at
boot time whether to use the debugging setup or not.
