Red Hat does apply their own modifications to the kernel, but if you install
the sources from the full install CD set their update site does keep the
sources up to date too. That is required by the license for Linux. I use
Red Hat because I can use FTP on my box without having to install the full
IIS. I don't have to install or allow Apache just to have FTP. I know I
can buy a FTP server for Windows, but it comes with Red Hat. In fact there
are two FTP servers available - WU-FTP and vsftp. I like vsftp because I
can have several individuals share a common directory by making their user
IDs point to the same directory. It also prevents those users from
accessing other directories on my system. It doesn't have all the query
tools that WU-FTP has as to who is logged on and what is in progress, but I
can see what is uploaded and downloaded when it completes or is interrupted.
Both FTPs support the resume feature of good FTP clients.

It is a good distribution and I am sorry to see them drop it. I may switch
to SuSe later after I see how their 9.1 with the 2.6 kernel works. I need
the FTP capability for consulting, but I don't want a web site or all that
other junk. I also have used sendmail at times, but not at the moment.
