It really is a confusing situation because my hard drive was going bad
and so I put a new hard drive in and installed Windows XP with SP2. I
installed VS 2005 which included SQLEXPRESS. Then I installed SQL
server 2000 but Enterprise Manager only recognized XP\SQLEXPRESS as my
server. I tried to add XP which is the name I specified for SQL 2000
Server but it said it the server did not exist or access is denied. I
then uninstalled VS 2005 and SQLEXPRESS 2005 and SQL 2000 Server and
then reinstalled SQL 2000 Server. Now Enterprise Manager still says
that XP/SQLEXPRESS is still the server even though I deleted SQLEXPRESS
and VS 2005 and it still will not recognize XP as my server when I try
to add it. All I want to do is to be able to use SQL 2000 Server with
VS 2003 and VS 2005 and I am at a standstill befuddled by the complexity
of trying to reach that goal after successfully running SQL 2000 server
for 5 years on this machine. I have no idea why it still thinks that
SQLEXPRESS is my server. Any ideas where to go from here?
I did ask you some questions. However you did not answer them. I also
included some advice about how Enterprise Manager works, but you don't
seem to have bothered.
Your new post rather adds more confusion, because now you say that you
run Windows XP, whereas in your previous post you said you were runninhg
Windows 2000.
As I understood from your previous post, you tried to install SQL 2000,
but you were only able to install the workstation tools. This indicates
that you tried to install an edition of SQL 2000 that does not run on
Windows XP.
I will ask again: which edition of SQL 2000 did you (try to) install on
Windows XP?
Are you running Windows XP SP2 now?
Before you installed the new hardware, which operation system and edition
were you running then?
As for the entry XP\SQLEXPRESS in Enterprise Manager, just right-click
it, and select Delete Server Registration.
