not just here in this group) that it's NOT that "simple". Whether users
are accessing these groups via newsreaders or via web forums, the plain
fact is that this information is not being disclosed to them upfront.
There is nothing to tell them that they should search for dotnet or
adonet or aspnet, etc. IMO that is Microsoft's fault, not the users'.
And especially with their forums, it would be so easy for MS to prevent
users from making this mistake (less simple with newsreader client -
they could start with using the Description field instead of leaving it
blank, but not all newsreaders expose the Description field)

I am failing to understand why you take this so personally. :-) is it
because the technology which you've spent a lot of time and effort to
become proficient in is becoming passe? I can understand that: I have
the same feelings. And, yes, it is sometimes all too easy to be tempted
to take these frustrations out on the users (believe me, I'm no saint -
I have had my meltdown moments in usenet posts that I wish I could take
back). That is why I use the canned reply I saved. It's a matter of
seconds to paste that into a reply, so it's not like it's taking up a
large part of my day. And I have the satisfaction that users feel helped
by the reply, rather than beaten on.
Would like to let you know that I really like your "canned response". So
much that I'm sorely tempted to steal it for my own use. <g>
Too often an OP when they get a "wrong newsgroup" reply think that one is
trying to be a newsgroup bully - waging some kind of petty turf war. When in
fact one is doing their very best to help. Also it isn't so much that they
are more likely find a knowledgeable answer in the correct group, as it is
that the reply itself, is more likely to be reviewed by knowledgeable
people.
I'm occasionally tempted to answer some questions. But even when I'm sure I
know the answer, I'm always stopped by the fact that I have throughly
misunderstood a question at times and provided a wrong answer. Fortunately
someone is always around to correct me. I would hate to give bad advice and
let it go unchallenged. Plus I always learn something from the correction.
