We have a user running Windows 2000 Professional SP4. He performed asystem
restore that seems to have partially rolled back his MDAC install.2.8
The Component Checker reveals an unknown version. Some files match the
SP1 version numbers, and others do not.1728219747
When we attempt to run the 2.8 SP1 installer, it fails to complete. If we
look in dasetup.log, here's what we find:
INSTALLW2KMIGRATIONPACK SetupRegisterOsComponent ProcAddress: 1728218877
INSTALLW2KMIGRATIONPACK SetupUnRegisterOsComponent ProcAddress:
INSTALLW2KMIGRATIONPACK SetupQueryRegisteredOsComponent ProcAddress:: 2
1728220575
INSTALLW2KMIGRATIONPACK SetupQueryRegisteredOsComponent Failed with Error
those,
Further into the log, we can see this:
INSTALLW2KMIGRATIONPACK SetupRegisterOSComponent Failed:
122: The data area passed to a system call is too small.
There are some files earlier in the log marked as locked, but setup
continues after detecting them. Are those causing a problem? If not
what is making this fail? Are there any steps for resolution other than a
format?
Here is one suggestion, maybe superstition, but it has worked for me before
on Win2k (WinXP is another ballgame).
Just a note before you begin. The MDAC contains three basic assortments of
components, the ADO, the OLE DB providers, and OLE engines. Attempting to
manually remove/rename OLE components, or agreeing to replacing them through
the setup dialogs, can be dangerous to the health of the system.
If you're not sure which is which download a list from the MDAC site.
Download the current 2.8 (which is platform specific) and go back a couple
of versions and download 2.6 and perhaps even 2.5 and 2.7.
Disconnect the network (if possible) and shutdown everything
(virus-checkers, etc.)
Uninstall any MDAC shown in the Add/Delete Programs. Install MDAC 2.5 or
2.6. Agree to replace any ADO or OLE components, leave OLE ones alone. Run
the Component Checker and see if you have a complete version.
Reboot/shutdown then install the next one, &etc. Until you get to 2.8.
Maybe for naught, but at least you feel like you are doing something. <g>
