I will give that a try, but that still wont tell me how it is getting
in that state. This database has been in production since 1/2004 and
this read only thing just happend last week out of the blue, there have
been no changes to the database in two months.

Then you should ask, "What has changed?"
Installed a newer version of MDAC, your application, some patches,
drivers...?
Something has changed.
