Why would any record get updated on an add new? The purpose is to add
a new record, not update anything. Maybe I'm getting stuck in
semantics but I'm a bit confused on that.

The update process seems to work fine - it only updates the record I
want. The add process is where there's trouble because in addition to
adding a new record it's also modifying existing records.
