adding and retriving data from SQL server to VB.net webapp

Is it even possible to add and retrive data between a webapplication created
by VB.net in Visual studio 2003 and a Data base created in SQL Server for
Developers?

I've tried everything I could find on MSDN.com, all the walkthroughs in MSDN
library 2004, and I bought a book "Microsoft ASP.NET fast & easy web
development" by Nitin Pandey. Nothing works

All I want to do is create a website that uses a data base.

would I have more success if I swithced to Oracle or Delphi?
Is it possible to use/install Access, DAO, and Active X .dll's on a server?
Any advice is welcome
