Excel Euro Symbol Issue

When trying to use microsoft excel.
I tried all methods of typing in the euro symbol €

but it appears as a vertical line every time.
I have also tried reformatting the cell to no avail.

has anyone any ideas.

i searched here, google, msdn, and technet to no avail
