ADO.NET performance with large tables

Hi list,
ADO.NET works with disconnected data I guess ?
So, the entire table has to be loaded. Let's say a large company has a huge
customer table. Loading every time that entire table seems like a
performance drop to me, or am I missing something ?
Many thanks in advance,
Nico Callewaert
