How to revert from MDAC 2.8 to 2.7?

We have a bank of 18 machines that do nightly batch processing.
All of the machines are of identical hardware configurations, same OS, same
software, and they hit the same SQL server.
We have found that 10 of the machines perform each task within 13-15 minutes.
The other 8 machines take 30-32 minutes to complete the same job.
We have been trying to find out what is different between the groups of
machines that make some fast and some slow.
I downloaded the MDAC Component Checker Utility from MS, and I found that
all the slow machines are running MDAC 2.8 RTM and all the fast machines are
running MDAC 2.7 SP1 REFRESH.
I found an article about 2.6 and 2.7, related to using dasetup.exe /u to
rollback to a previous version:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;842193&Product=mdac
But it doesn't state whether this will work with 2.8
I am also not sure if 2.7 was ever installed on these machines.
If 2.8 is the only install, it probably won't have anything to rollback to.
And the MDAC install docs state that installing an older version will not
overwrite a new version.
So, how can I go about getting 2.8 off these machines, and getting 2.7 on
them, aside from a complete OS reinstall and start from scratch?
FYi, clients are running Win2K Pro.
Thanks
.
