fwiw, I found that my mdac install was so totally borked that any
attempt to create a ado recordset bombed w/ the same error. Amazed
that it didn't happen earlier, since I use ado all the time. I
suspect that it began either at the time of my last windowsupdate
visit or my latest norton upgrade (the only software I've voluntarily
installed lately), although I can not say for certain. I downloaded
the latest mdac packages (2.8) and installed, but they silently
refused to function. No warning or error message, but the mdac
version checker showed that the bad files were not replaced. Coupled
w/ the completely vague error message, I'm very very very disappointed
in the mdac team. I finally resorted to unzipping the redists w/
winzip and manually replacing the outdated files. Normal operation
seems to be restored.

Good luck.
