Two things: To pass MCSA after MCDBA you'd also need to take 70-270 (or
70-210..).
The 2000-version of SQL Express is called MSDE (Microsoft SQL Desktop
Engine) and is also free.

Larry,
Thanks for the advice.
I'm looking at the 70-228 now as I have a pocket guide and Microsoft Press
book for that.
I found this link:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/aa336342.aspx and it appears I can
get
the 2005 Express Edition there.
Truthfully, if I am going to go the 2000 route for now I would think it
would make more sense to only install that. I don't guess there's an
express
version for 2000 is there?

The MCSA exam is based on the Windows Operating System, not the version
of
SQL Server you are using.
I would recommend that you go for your MCDBA first instead.
You can use the 70-228 exam as your elective for the MCSA if you want. In
fact, once you get an MCDBA, you only need to take one exam (70-218) to
become an MCSA.
You have supposedly until March 30, 2008 to pass the exams, but since
they
haven't placed the announcements in all the places they are supposed to
yet,
perhaps they have changed their minds about cancelling them.
My suggestions:
Download the free Express edition of SQL Server 2005.
Download the SQL Server 2005 Books Online (also free).
Play around with it. If you are familiar with Visual Studio, you should
have
no problems adjusting to the changes to SQL Server between 2000 and 2005.
At that point you can decide whether the differences are too great for
you
-- and all it will cost you is a little bit of your time.
If you plan on keeping your current job for a long time and have no
experience with the Visual Studio interface, I would get an MCDBA, then
take
the upgrade exam to one of the four MCITPs closer to the time when your
company is going to upgrade.

I have a small problem. I've just begun a job where the primary db is
SQL
Server 2000. The plan is eventually to go to 2005, but who knows how
long
that will be. I would like to get certified (going to go the MCSA
route
first), but I don't want to get certified in 2000 (they may not do it
anymore
but I believe I saw where they still did).
I've heard 2005 is a ton of difference, and I'm worried that I will get
things crossed up between the two. I'll be working with 2000 on a day
to day
basis for now.
Any advice?
