Here is my opinion about hat question.
It depends what technlology (.NET 1.X,sql sever 2000 or 2.x sql server 2005) you are working with or you want to work with. SQL Server 2000 is still around and it's going to be around for sometimes. I would get certified in SQL Server 2000 first (practice a lot of exercises) and then upgrade to SQL 2005. That is exactly what I'm doing right now. You need at least two Window servers (70-290 and 70-291) or (70-290 and 70-228). By taking that route, you would have a stronger background and confidence and I'm pretty sure that the upgrade would be a piece of cake (there would be a lot of overlap).
I'm also an MCDBA candidate. I have exam 70-228 left which I will take at the end of this month.
My advice to you is, start with SQL 2000 first then upgrade to SQL Server 2005 by taking 70-431. Taking 70-431 only will not make you an MCDBA.
Good luck
Good advice! I originally planned to go the route of MCDBA also (as I wish to also do MCSA). I took 70-431 on a whim and it worked out. I may still backtrack to the 2000 exams as I don't use 2005 yet on a day to day basis. Every server I touch is using SS 2000 and will be for many years, I suspect.
