OT: Tuesday mindboggler

My dad showed up the other day with a pretty short haircut. In fact, I asked
him if his barber cut adults' hair too. It's the classic "School's out for
the summer" haircut sported by many 9 year olds the world over. Anyway, what
got me thinking, and thinking, and thinking, and thinking, and thinking some
more, was the question I posed to him:

How does hair know how long it is?

For instance, your head hair will grow and grow, to seemingly infinite
lengths, unless you do something about it. Like going to a barber and
cutting your hair to look like a child. But, body hair doesn't keep growing.
Try this (I'm not ashamed to say I did):

Find a place on your body where your wife/girfriend/other won't notice your
feminine behavior for a few days. Shave any hair in this small area off. Or
trim it really tight. Wait a few days, a week, whatever, then check back
with your smooth silky skin.
It's the same length as the surrounding hair! What gives? Shouldn't it be
shorter? After all, it grew, but so did the surrounding hair! Right?!
Apparently not! What's the deal?

Body hair is some kind of superintelligent being. Individually, they're
pretty F'in stupid. Put them together en masse, and they KNOW. The just
KNOW. It's creepy.

Head hair and facial hair don't seem to posess this intelligence. Is head
hair of a different species than body hair?
