set the MaintainServerList to No and reboot all of the XP machines and
likewise for anymachine that is rebooted regularly. since you do not have
a WINS box in the mix (didn't see one listed), the order of name
resolution is thru NBT Cache, then WINS, then broadcasts (no passing
routers), then LMHOSTS (this is where you are having success) then Hosts
file and finally DNS. The XP boxes may think they are potential browsers
and try to assume either the Master browser or Backup Browser for the
subnet. If there is anyway to plug in a WINS/NBNS box do so, at least
until you have disposed of the 9x boxes. my 2¢
