To your original question. Each disk in a RAID system holds part of the
information from all the other disks (this is called parity). (I am Assuming
you have a RAID 5 (not a Mirror which holds all of the information from all
the other disks or some striped RAID) Your RAID system will function if one
of the disks goes down because the other disks hold information from the
failed disk (this is true for mirror sets as well). The system will perform
slower because the information on the failed disk has to be accessed from
the remaining functioning disks. When you replace the failed disk you
should be able to restore the RAID system to it's original functionality.
This is done through Disk Management in the computer management MMC (ALT
click My computer and select manage) Also RAID 5 Can only be on dynamic
disks, and only on Windows 2000 Server or 2003 Servers. After you replace
the failed disk, convert it to dynamic, and format it, Right-click the
replaced disk, and then click Reactivate Disk. The RAID-5 volume's status
should change to Regenerating, then Healthy. I am out of time, this is only
a general answer, to a RAID-5 problem which I don't even know if that is
what you have or what OS you are using. Once the RAID 5 is repaired
transfer your info to a regular disk. Otherwise come up with you OS
version, RAID type (hardware or software) that will make your problem easier
to diagnose.
