As I have never bought an Exam Cram book before, is the books contents based
on prior studying of the subject?
If this is the case, one would suggest it would not be suitable for a first
book of study?

As I mentioned in my original post, the Exam Cram books should only be
used as a final refresher, when you feel that you're reasonably well
prepared for the exam.

I quote from the book itself :

"This book is not intended to teach new material. Instead, it assumes
that you have a solid foundation of knowledge but could use a refresher
on important concepts, as well as a guide to exam topics and
objectives. The book features test-taking strategies, time-saving study
tips, and a special Cram *** that includes tips, acronyms, and memory
joggers not available anywhere else! The Cram *** is especially
useful for last-minute review before the test begins."
