I am truly not interested in a flame fight but I have to respond to this.Let me start out by saying that I am responding to this post directly and not the others beneath it. With that said...
First and foremost I think you were a bit harsh and made assumptions about
this guy that were unwarranted. He has made it clear that he took a
nonchalant approach to the exam and will try harder next time. He admitted
zero experience but then again there are a lot of degrees that are issued at
universities to people with zero experience. Employers require these people
to have the degree before they are allowed to gain the experience and that
can be the case for IT certs as well. It is IDEAL to have prior experience
but it is also possible to set up your own server and follow the guides (MS
Press thus far is my favorite) and pass the exam.
My biggest problem is your approach. I have gathered from the newsgroups
that you are a fairly well respected person in here and that can be
dangerous. Leadership is a double-edged sword that can slay you if your ego
gets in the way. You had an opportunity to help a new person in the IT
field, perhaps even mentor but you chose to chastise him.
Maybe you are rolling your eyes right now, plotting my imminent doom,
whatever. My hope is that you will change your approach, hop off the high
horse and be more of a help than a hindrance.
Regards,
Chris
I do not flame. I see no need in it. Nor did I assume anything with the original post. He openly stated that he had ZERO experience in dealing with Windows 2003 Server and its services. That is not an assumption, it is an admission of his part. Trying harder on his part would require him respecting the exam and certification he wishes to achieve by knowing the material intimately (calm down guys) and taking the advice of Microsoft when they post an audience profile for ALL their exams and certifications.
I am a little tired of this whole "chicken and egg" concept. Experience leads to certifications. Period. Am I the only one in the I.T. field that started out with no certifications? I do not think so. I proved to my employers that I could do the job that was requested of me. I achieved every one of my certifications after having proven to myself that I knew the material and had plenty of hands-on experience with the technology. That is design of the certification program. That is why every certification program lists an audience profile.
Having taught for years in the I.T. field, I believe my approach is polished. My desire to help those who what to excel in the I.T. field it undeniable. But I am not a slave to my students. I am simply a guide. There is a lot of work that needs to be done by those willing to make it in the I.T. field, and I cannot do it for them. You mentioned the title of "leadership". I am not the leader of these newsgroups. I am a volunteer. Whatever title you tag on to me is your issue not mine.
As far as changing my approach, you know nothing about me or my approach. I have mentored hundreds of people who are serious about learning and wanting to excel in the I.T. field. My advice and techniques, however disagreeable to you, help more than hinder.
