adding a BAM alert

When I load up my BAM portal I'm able to view activity and aggregations...
but when I try to add an alert...

Name: myAlert
Message: Alert has fired.
Priority: Medium
Alert Enabled (checked)
Owners: BAMuser
Alert Security - Allow others to see this alert and subscribe to it (checked)

I get:

"An unspecified error has occured. Use the navigation bar on the left to
access Business Activity Monitoring views. If the problem persists, contact
your System Administrator."

I assume this has something to do with permissions... as all of my issues
with BAM have been so far. I'm really not sure where to start. BAMuser is
the local user for my BTS2006 VM.
