I just got some new Dell laptops to add to my existing SBS 2000 network. I
wanted to push out the lastest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader so I
downloaded the executable from Adobe and added it to my Client Applications
setup. Of course, this executable is not the full Adobe Reader install but
rather creates an instance of Adobe's Download manager then when run, in turn
downloads and installs the software.
Unfortunately, when my client machine users get the SBS Software
Installation prompt and select Start, this crappy Adobe download manager
never connects out to the Internet to download and install the reader. It
just sits there for ever and a day with "Connecting...." in it's status bar.
Also unfortunately, trying to cancel this install is a real nightmare and
just keeps poping back to the same status box, requiring a system reboot to
knock it off.
I don't want the users who haven't been through this yet to have to go
through the pain. Right now they are clicking "Postpone" in the SBS Client
Install but I'd like to know how I can "undo" the actions of the "Add
Software To Computer Wizard" so that this application is not pushed out
during user logon. Is there a log file or status flag somewhere in the
bowels of SBS that I can alter to either fool the installer into thinking the
application has already been installed on some machines, or alternately just
cancel it all together? I can't believe that cancelling a client software
install selection is not an option in the wizards.
I _think_ you can rerun the Add Software to Computer wizard and deselect applications.
You can also remove the broken Adobe install from the ClientApps setup.
Personally, I always use GPO to deploy Adobe Reader anyway, and regardless of the method for deploying it across your LAN, you need to sign up for Adobe's redistribution licence.
