On the SBS, open DNS Management. Expand the Forward Lookup Zones, and I bet you'll find a "." zone. Delete it. Now you'll be able to specify forwarders if you wish (they're *optional* and I personally would work without).

Check the event logs on the slow workstations for errors/warnings related to DNS and/or identifying the computer or domain.
