Re: Multiple instances of the QuickLaunch toolbar being loaded

Hello Brad:

The behaviour you are describing sounds like a virus or a piece of "malware"
aka spyware. I did not find any reference anywhere to "multiple copies of
quicklaunch" (or quick launch)

You did not say with what user name and rights you were using to log on, but
since you said locally, I assume THE administrator.

In regards to "where does the ql toolbar get loaded", you begin the process
by a right click on the taskbar, left click on toolbars, then tick the ones
you want. This changes an entry in the registry from 0 to 1 to enable the
quick launch bar to be shown on the taskbar. Which one of the hundreds of
registry keys that have IE and Toolbar in their name, I haven't a clue.
Perhaps this reg key is duplicated. Backup the registry before making any
changes.

The quick launch tool bar is a folder in the Documents and Settings portion
of your root drive, such as:

C:\Documents and Settings\PERSON LOGGED ON\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

You might poke around a bit to see if there may be mutiple copies of this
folder. That could account for them being stacked across the width of your
taskbar. The next question is how did they get there. See paragraph one
above.

Right click each quick launch section, one at a time, then click on open
folder. In the address bar of IE will be the path of the folder for that ql
bar. If there are not multiple copies, is the path the same for all of
them?

If not, track them down and alter them in some way so you can see which is
which. This might help. Login as a different user (you could create one
that has logon rights to the server, if even temporary). See if a different
user has the same issue. If so, you can be assured of a malware, or a rouge
program of some sort, as this brand new user should only have one folder.

Download and run a couple of spyware finders (adaware, spybot search and
destroy), and maybe highjack this. This may tell you what is going on.

Or, flatten and reinstall. :-(.

I have an annoying issue that is plaguing both my SBS server as well as
our
other win2K and win2k3 servers.

If I log in locally or on a terminal server session, multiple copies of
the
"QuickLaunch" tool bar are being loaded. In some case 5 or 6 instances! It
basically
takes up the entire bottom of the screen. So to fix, you have to
right-click
somewhere on the task bar, click toolbars and uncheck the multiple
instances
of the QuickLaunch toolbar that are checked there.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before? Where does the quicklaunch toolbar
get loaded anyway? I googled the issue and found absolutely nothing on the
topic at all...
Any ideas?

Thanks, Brad
