Hi James:
Not that I looked at every reference that appears when you search the web or
newsgroups for "telnet 25 not responding", but an amazingly large number of
the ones I found refer to MacAfee AV products as the culprit.
Even if you don't have that flavor of AV, could it be that the AV is
blocking, or has redirected the mail server to listen on a different port?

Hi Johnsp3
Thanks for your reply.
Try telnet to Port 25 on the SBS Server itselfThat's is what I have been doing - still no success.
Do you know what settings could I have missed to prevent the SMTP service
responding to this command?
Regards
James

If you are not getting an SMTP banner when telnetting to port 25 of your
SBS Server on the Lan, you need to troubleshoot as to why this is being
blocked or not listening. Try telnet to Port 25 on the SBS Server
itself, what happens?

Just tried a few more things with no success:
Un-installed GFI Mail Essentials - no change, so re-installed.
Re-installed SMTP component of IIS - was curiously hidden/missing
before - has now re-appeared, still no change.
Re-installed Exchange from SBS 2000 disk and re-applied SP3 and post
torollup - no change.
Any more ideas?

Hi
I'm having trouble getting my SBS2000 server to receive mail through
SMTP. Until now we have been happy using the POP3 Connector, but now
we'd like to use SMTP. I have started by running the ICW, telling it
checked.-use SMTP and Disable POP3 and it has made a new SMTP connector. The
Virtual SMTP server is using all un-assigned ip's on port 25 with no
filters and Access control has Anonymous, Basic and integrated
there are also no IP restrictions. Even after running ICW the POP3
connector still exists - is this right?
When testing the setup on the server itself using 'telnet \\servername
25' I get 'Could not open connection to the host, on port 25 : Connect
failed'
Active Ports states that inetinfo.exe is listening on port 25.
FWIW - I don't have ISA installed but I am running IIS & GFI Mail
Essentials.
Any ideas why I cannot get the exchange welcome message when opening
port 25 using telnet?
Many Thanks
James
