Re: Won't remote re-boot

i'm not fully sure about what you mean by "bugcheck". is it the common BSOD?
if so, it usually indicates the file name that cause the error. You may
want to start from there.

Also try manually reapplying all the latest hotfixes from MS that were
downloaded and installed on the server. Maybe a problem during the install a
hotfix caused it to install imcompatible files/incomplete file sets.

I know windows xp has a error recovery tool that sends the error to MS after
rebooting from a BSOD and sometimes gives back an answer about the cause. I
think windows 2k doesn't have this ability but maybe there is software out
there that does the same trick...

Another alternative is to use the the Autoruns tool from sysinternals.com
that allows you to see all the loaded device drivers. There are some ugly
types of spyware, drm, etc that install device drivers at a very low level.
From there you can google to find out what each device driver does.

In the meantime, if you bring up the Properties for "My computer", open the
"advanced" tab and click the button for the Startup and Recovery settings.
there you are able to set the server's behaviour after a BSOD to auto
restart or not.
in the workstation version of windows 2k i know it automatically restarts. I
suppose the server doen't come configured to do it by default. you have to
change it manually.
This doesn't solve the problem but at least won't leave the server hanging
forever with a bsod until someone presses the reset button.

I stopped Symantec Anti-Virus before rebooting. Nothing in the event log
and there was nothing helpfull in the Bugcheck.

That's what you need to troubleshoot--any details on the bugcheck?
Anything recorded in the system event log?

In addition to hardware drivers, both antivirus and antispyware software
may cause driver-related crashes.

Hi Pedro,
Thanks for your reply. I went onto the site and tried to restart on the
site and it came up with a blue screen Bugcheck. I have not installed
any new equipment or software for about 12 months so am unsure what the
cause is at the moment.

maybe there is some service that is not stopping properly and is
preventing the server from rebooting....

You may want to google for the registry key "waittokillservicetimeout"
that defines how much time the server waits for a service to terminate
properlly. After that time it will kill the service/process.

Also you ca try psshutdown from SysInternals (part of the PsTools
suite). It's freeware and can be found at www.sysinternals.com . It is
a great remote shutdown tool because it allows you to (brute) force a
shutdown if you can't get a normal, friendly shutdown to work.

Hi,
Has anyone got any ideas why the SBS2000 won't remote re-boot as this
becomes a hassle after installing MS patches remotely.
