Re: Moving Printers

Thank You Cris and Kevin,

OK. I think I was confused because I never quite understood where the
drivers lived.

Is this how it works?
(question marks indicate ....??the part that was confusing me.??)

The Printers have assigned IP numbers which are excluded form the dhcp
range.

1. Download the latest drivers for Windows2000 and Windows XP.

2. Install the printer on the server using the "Have Disk" option to browse
to the downloaded drivers for Windows 2000.

?? At that point I think there is an option to install drivers for other
operating systems. Browse to the downloaded drivers for XP, the wizard
will store these files so that XP computers can use them to Install the
drivers on the XP computers when they run the Install Printers Wizard.??

3. Share the printers on the network.

4. From each Workstation run the Add-A-Printer wizard or drag and drop the
printer from network share to local printers folder.

?? If the specifc printer model was previously installed, the drivers are
already available and will be used.
If the specific printer had never been installed, the wizard will use the XP
driver files stored on the server to install XP drivers on the
workstation.??

5. ?? When printing to a shared printer. The workstation uses local XP
print drivers to create a print file and it is sent to the shared printer
over the network. the port settings on that computer, for that printer, are
used to route the plot file to the printer itself and the Windows 2000
drivers are bypassed.??

Thanks
