Howdy. This is not a question but an informative post in the hopes that it
helps someone else in the future.
My parent's computer was heavily infested with spyware including the TIBS
dialer. They had been complaining that the system had not been working well
for a while so I tried to clean it. Ended up just backing up their data and
starting over from scratch. FDISKed and Formatted with a 98 boot disk first
and then reloaded their XP Pro with NTFS file system. This is a system that
I built them with AMD Processor and Gigabyte MB. It worked great until I
took it to their house and started installing their new USB2 card and
printer. The system started hanging. Tried to reboot and it would not go
past the MUP.SYS file.
I googled this and found as many answers as people having this problem. I
did the normal troubleshooting (removing pieces a bit at a time, etc.). I
noticed that many of the fixes on google had to do with the system BIOS. I
Unplugged the computer and removed the BIOS battery for 45 seconds. Replaced
the battery. Accepted the default BIOS settings and everything is working
fine now. I don't know if this will help anyone else but just wanted to put
it out there. Thanks for your time and all of the great help that I have
received here.
