I have seen this happen on RTM versions of Windows XP Pro. When a user
changes their password at the request of the server (because it has expired
or is about to), something screws up.
I have also had exactly this issue on a customer site recently on a Windows
XP Pro SP1 system where the passwords are not aged.
This is how I fixed it:-
1 Login as local administrator (If local administrator password is lost,
login as domain admin and reset local administrator password)
2 Rename the users Documents & Settings folder
3 Move the PC to a workgroup
4 Shutdown and remove power and remove Network cable (this ensures the whole
box & NIC gets powered off)
5 Restart and login as local administrator
6 Rejoin the PC to the domain
7 Restart and login as the user (which will recreate Docs & Settings folder)
8 Copy essential documents & Desktop from folder renamed in 2 above
9 Voila, job done.
