I am glad things are working for you. A few observations. My servers
are usually up to date with service packs. They may not be up to date
with patches. Some folks mention stopping all AV before installing
patches and service packs. I see that it did no good trying to stop
the AV stuff.
I am a fan of Veritas Backup Exec. I have installed the product on
30-50 servers. Never a problem. On one SBS 2003 the server would not
reboot after installing BE. I have installed BE on a half dozen
SBS2003. I paid for a call to PSS. They suggested the obvious of it
must be BE. I sent an email to Veritas and they sent me an article on
an alternate install method that worked. This was the first and only
time BE has broken a server. Sometimes you just have rotten luck.
