I am trying to set up SBS 2000 on a brand new computer.
The computer is plenty capable - IBM xSeries 225 with 2 gig
ram, tons of disk, etc. This server is not connected to
anything else yet (not the internet) so no viruses, worms,
etc. I can set up SBS2000 from the CDs OK, but when I try
to install the various updates/Service Packs/Feature
Packs/Roll-ups, etc I run into problems.

I have downloaded all of these packs on a different
computer and burned them onto CDs - I do not download them
directly on the new server - not attached to anything yet.

The problem is that after the update has been installed,
and the computer is re-booted a bunch of services get "hung
on starting" and never come back. It is usually the same
group of 4 or 5 services:

WWW Publishing service hung on starting
  SMTP service hung on starting
Exchange Routing Engine service hung on starting
Exchange POP3 service hung on starting
Site Server ILS service hung on starting
Exchange IMAP4 service hung on starting

It is not a problem with some updates, and re-installing
things in a different order seems to avoid the problem with
other updates. But this is getting tough - I am on my
fifth attempt at re-installing SBS2000 on this computer and
I keep getting this problem somewhere along the line.

The latest time, I just installed the ISA2000 SP1, it was
fine. Then I installed the ISA2000 Feature Pack and I got
the above problem. What I installed was:
    SBS2000 using all the defaults
    SQL2000 SP3a
    Windows 2000 SP2 (I KNOW there is SP4, but I went that
route once already - bear with me)
    Exchange 2000 SP3
    Exchange 2000 Post-SP3 Roll-up
    ISA 2000 SP1 (again, I KNOW there is a SP2)
    ISA 2000 Feature Pack 1
got the error after installing isafp1.exe and again
after installing isafp1sd.exe, did not try installing
  isafp1ur.exe

Any ideas? Again, nothing else has been installed yet,
nothing like anti-virus, backup or other application
  software, just stuff from Microsoft.

  Thanks,

  Paul W.
