Delay in receiving emails

We're currently running sbs2000 with exchange as a smtp server.

There seems to be delays in receiving our emails, some come through straight
away and some seem to take ages, the system had been working ok for quite
sometime but over the last month or 2 the problem has be come quite a
problem.

We are having reports of people sending emails and us not receiving them for
2 days or even more.

Anyone got any ideas on what the problem could be and how to fix it.
