There are a couple of things you can do. Logged in to the workstation as an
administrative user, go to control panel/system/automatic updates. Even
admins should not be able to change settings here if the GP has been applied
correctly. Also in the workstations' AU tab, you should see the settings
you specified in the GP, but in dimmed items that can't be changed.
There's a log file you can check on the workstation, c:\windows\windows
update.log. Once everything is set up, you should be able to see log
entries where the workstation checks the SUS server for updates. If I
remember right, there's an error that shows up in this log that can be
safely ignored. If you see any errors, search technet or the SUS FAQ before
trying to correct them, just in case it's a "normal" error. Or, just verify
that SUS is working and ignore errors in that log thereafter. Also, admin
users can still run WU even with SUS, and WU activity is logged here also.
And lastly, you can log in as an admin and run WU at a time when you think
patches should have been applied by SUS. If WU finds that the patch needs
to be applied, SUS is obviously not working properly. Remember how SUS
updates, though - for example, I have it set to check for updates
automatically and apply them at 7am. So I log in at 9am and my workstation
checks with SUS, finding that updates need to be applied. SUS downloads the
updates to my workstation, but does not apply them until the next day at 7.
And some of this gets done at sort of random times to keep all your
bandwidth from being used by SUS at once. So you'll probably find that
updates are applied a day later than you expect.
