Next time it happens, try the procedure that follows. With the latest
versions of windows, the old Eject Tape command that a backup program might
issue when it has finished no longer works. So, if your current backup
program were NTBackup then your tape will not eject of its own accord unless
you either have a little utility (which I can supply), or you follow the
procedure below.

The Procedure:

If you have an Administrator log on, log on, click start, programs,
administrative tools, click Computer Management.

In Computer Management, open up Storage, Removable Storage, Physical
Locations.

There you should see the name of your tape drive.
Right click on it and click Eject.

____

If this causes the tape to eject then the problem is as I have stated. There
are other issues that can occur as mentioned by others, but suffice it to
say, if your backup system is configured correctly, these issues will not
appear.

If this solves this problem, then you can either follow this procedure, or
post back & I can forward my little EjectTape utility.

It is important to ensure that your backups are correctly configured. f you
would like some basic pointers on this (you will need someone quite computer
literate for this), then post back.

- Tim

Hi

We have a Small Business Server and have been
experiencing difficulties when removing the back up
tape. The server has to be turned off before the tape
can be removed. Our IT company have installed for a
trial period software which has corrected the problem but
they are now wanting to charge us £315. + VAT for it.
Surely the Server should work without having to pay
extra. The software is 'Veritas Backup software and
media kit, Backup exec windows, small service premier
v9.1, license open license level B. VIP competitive
upgrade'. I'm sorry I'm not very technically minded, but
surely if the server was working and the back up tape was
coming out, then the server should be repaired (its only
about a year old) and not have us pay approx £370. on top
of the original price.

Please help, our manager is off on long term sick leave
and I have to make a decision about whether to buy this
software very soon. We are a small company and can't
justify spending the money
