RAID 0, 1, 5

i run a Dell PE2600 with split backplane.
(5) 36GB SCSI drives

drive 1 and 2 are mirrored and only used for operating
system and very select other storage.

drive 3,4, and 5 are in a RAID5 set

I did not purchase a 6th drive for a "hot spare" however I
intend to do so.
