I've never had to this with SBS and will also again encourage you to move
the question (it is SBS2003 right?) to the SBS2003 group.
It _may_ be possible to attempt activation, take the phone option, fail, get
asked for product ID, plug it in, but I really don't know.
You should call PSS (MS support) but dim memory suggests their answer is
'flatten/reinstall' (I believe the question has been raised in the 2003
group. HINT HINT :-).
I'm wondering about another alternative. If the current system is preR2 and
you purchase media today you will get R2. If you throw CD1 of the R2 set at
it it _may_ ask you to put in a ser no. Procession through the R2
installation should not break anything which exists and it _may_ resolve the
issue.

I think the client knew it wasn't legal and they are happy to buy it. It
wouldn't activate with the key they had. So assuming we buy the software
how
do I apply the license? Thanks.

the fact that the system wanted to activate doesn't alone suggest it's
not
licensed.
BTW sounds like SBS2003
SBS public Newsgroups:
SBS 4.x: microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz
SBS 2000: microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000
SBS 2003: microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs
if your current news server does not carry the mentioned groups you
should
be able to connect directly to news.microsoft.com

I have a new client that has Small Business Server. When I installed SP
1
it
wanted me to activate the product. So obviously my client needs to
purchase
the product. My question is what do I buy and how do I apply the
license
without reinstalling the operating system? Can I just put in the
product
key
for the newly purchased software and activate it successfully?
