First, try connecting the laptop to the router with a cable rather than
wireless. Then try to use ConnectComputer again. For slowness, you want to
try disabling disabling rss and autotuninglevel on the Vista laptop (even if
you don't have Win2K3 SP2 installed):

I'm having problems with connecting a vista client to an SBS 2003 SP1
based network. The Vista notebook was delivered with XP Professional,
which I updated to Vista Business. No other software so far.
I also installed Microsoft KB926505 on the SBS Server and KB930955 on the
other XP Clients.
The Client is connected to a router via WLAN and the WLAN connection seems
to work fine. However, it takes an awful length of time for the Vista
notebook to find the other computers on the network. Once it has detected
the server, I run 'ConnectComputer' in the Internet Explorer and am
prompted to download 'nshelp' (or similar). When I confirm, however, the
computer tells me that I should make sure the server is connected to the
client (although the server is listed in the Windows Explorer!); this will
go on forever.
I then tried to manually add the Vista notebook to the domain, which
seemed to work without any major problems. But it still takes the computer
such a long time to detect the other computers in the network (sometimes
15 - 20 minutes). I read somewhere that in cases like these one should
look for an up-to-date driver but the one I have got already seems to be
the latest available.
I havn't experienced any of these problems with our XP clients. But I must
admit I am a total newcomer to Vista so any help would be greatly
appreciated.
