Only a guess...
FIX: The system stops responding during high disk activity on a computer
that is running Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915691&SD=tech
Since you appear to be running the SBS 2003 on a Dell 8400 desktop computer
(rather than a server-grade platform), I'm not sure if anything in this
machine's I/O system could be causing your problem.
Have you tried another external USB drive?
Also, I assume you're not trying to back up the Exchange Store during the
daily Exchange maintenance cycle (usually 2-5 am).

Replacing the memory did not help. I ran the full full SBSbackup last
night and it stopped responding. I do daily backups of the Exchange
store and it has not stopped from that in a long time. It now only
seems to stop when doing the full SBSbackup. In the event view, it show
the backup of drive C: conpleting and then starts the Exchange backup.
The, as always, I get the ESE Backup and that is the last thing in the
events.
Any ideas on what to try next?
