Re: SBS 2003 Unresponsive

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I think swapping the memory out is as good as any a place to start.

Not much to the log file...

Backup Runner started.
Launching NTBackup: ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Windows Small Business Server\Backup\Small Business Backup Script.bks"
/d "SBS Backup created on 10/14/2006 at 3:00 PM" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no
/hc:off /m normal /j "Small Business Server Backup Job" /l:s /f
"F:\Backup Files\Small Business Server Backup (02).bkf" /UM

My Exchange store is 9.12GB (at least that is the size of the backup
file created when I do an Exchange store only backup).

As for that article, I am unsure if "The program that you use to back
up the database uses the Volume Shadow Copy Service in Microsoft
Windows Server 2003." Any idea how I would know that?

My desperation is leading me to replace the memory. I have another PC
with the same memory so I will probably try switching them out this
week.

Please post the SBS wizard's backup log for the failed backup. I'm
assuming
that the rest of the SBS backup does not complete either. How large is
your
Exchange priv store?

Intermittent problems like this are a pain to diagnose. As Owen said in
a
past post to you, it may be a RAM problem. You may want to remove RAM
modules from the server (1 at a time, if you can) and see if the problem
persists. Also, make sure your UPS software isn't doing any testing
during
your scheduled backup times.

I found this KB, but I'm not sure it applies...

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may stop responding when
you try to back up your Exchange 2003 database files by using a program
that
uses the Volume Shadow Copy Service
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892514/

And you might try reposting to the SBS 2003 Newsgroup..

FYI, it happened again yesterday after the server ran a complete SBS
backup (I have it set to do that once a week). As normal, that backup
triggered the ESE Backup and then it stopped responding.

So it seems no matter how I do the backup, anytime I run an Exchange
backup, it triggers the ESE Beackup and SOMETIMES causes the system to
become unresponsive.
