Thanks Steve, found this out eventually.... odd that lots of stuff leaves
the last bit off! I agree about the really bad idea... been having a
running argument with a client about this who refuses to change but b** like
about his terrible mail system....

Just telling Exchange it's not authoritative is not enough. You must also
tell it what to do with messages for which it doesn't have a recipient in
the SMTP Virtual Server properties > Messages tab > Forward all unresolved
mail to host box.
Note that configuring Exchange using a domain name that you share with an
ISP is a really bad idea. You're much better off in the long-run to only
use one service.
