No, I wouldn't think so, because he's on the LAN side, and on that same IP
network. You aren't using IPSec to control who can connect, I presume? Does
he get the IP address via DHCP? Have you checked the subnet mask on the Mac?
Can he ping the server by IP address?

It has to be the internal NIC....
