Steve Ballmer's TechEd keynote
(http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/steve/2004/05-24teched04.asp )
is an invaluable crib *** on Microsoft's go-to-market strategy. I
would encourage every Microsoft customer, partner or competitor to read
and re-read the transcript of the CEO's comments.

Spammer sentenced to seven years in prison
A man who sent 850 million junk e-mails through
accounts he opened with stolen identities was
sentenced to up to seven years in prison on Thursday.
Atlanta-based Internet service provider Earthlink
Inc. said it hoped the sentence and an earlier
$16.4 million civil judgment against Howard
Carmack will deter other spammers.

Canadian, 16, on Randex worm rap
Canadian police have charged a 16 year-old youth
with writing and distributing the damaging computer
worm Randex. The teenager from Mississauga, near
Toronto, faces "mischief and fraudulent use of
a computer" charges. Canadian authorities have
withheld the suspect's name because he is a juvenile.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigators reckon
Randex infected more than 9,000 computers shortly
after the first versions of the worm appeared last
November.

Taiwanese engineer arrested for creating Trojan
A Taiwanese computer engineer was arrested on
charges he had designed a virus-like Trojan horse
that Chinese hackers found and used to attack
the island's business and government systems,
police said Thursday. Wang Ping-an, 30, designed `
`Peep,'' which earlier this year allowed the
attackers to steal information and retain control
of infected computer systems, police said.

First 64-bit virus identified
Symantec Canada has just analyzed the first
known 64-bit malicious threat. The virus, called
W64.Rugrat.3344, is a "proof-of-concept" virus
and is not spreading in the wild, although it
is the first known threat to attack 64-bit
Windows executables successfully. The threat
does not infect 32-bit executables and will
not run on 32-bit Windows platforms. It only
targets Win64-bit systems.

Attacks on banks, insurance firms rise
Cyberattacks on IT systems of banks and insurance
companies are on the rise worldwide, according to
a survey released Thursday. Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu's
study showed that nearly 83 percent of respondents
said their systems had been compromised in the past
year, compared with 39 percent in 2003. Nearly 40
percent of the respondents whose systems were
attacked reported financial losses.

Treasury issues phishing schemes alert, advice
The Treasury Department today warned against schemes
in which identity thieves spoof government agencies
and financial firms to gain sensitive and financial
information from unsuspecting consumers in a report
that also offers some tips on how to prevent “phishing.”
In phishing schemes, an e-mail is sent to a consumer,
directing him or her to a fraudulent Web site, which
closely resembles the site for a legitimate organization,
which may have wide name recognition or typically
inspires trust.

Mac OS fix fails to plug security hole
A security hole still threatens Mac OS X users
after a patch issued by Apple Computer last week
failed to fix the underlying problem, security
experts say. The security issue could allow an
attacker to transfer and then run a malicious
program on a Mac, if the Mac's user can be enticed
to go to a fake Web page on which the program has
been placed.

Cheswick: Viruses primed to be more complex, vicious
Viruses and worms are primed to become more complex,
vicious and dangerous as the days of quick and easy
exploits come to an end thanks to Microsoft Corp.'s
efforts to finally lift its game. Speaking at the
Auscert conference in Queensland on Monday, former
Bell Laboratories researcher, IT security author
and founder of IT security company Lumeta Corp. Bill
Cheswick said improved security will force malicious
code writers to construct more complex wares that will
either circumvent or push conventional defenses such
as antivirus software and firewalls to their limits.

Microsoft security spend greater than the Star Wars missile system
Microsoft has spent more on securing its software
than was spent on the Star Wars missile project,
the company's head of security has told conference
guests. An unfortunate analogy for Iain Mulholland
to use since the project was a complete failure and
little more than the private obsession of a few top
American ego-maniacs.

Microsoft admit they were hacked
Speaking exclusively to I.T. Vibe today, Microsoft
admitted that a portion of their UK website was
compromised by hackers and defaced. As can be
seen from the screenshot below, the UK press site
was replaced with text showing that the site was
temporarily taken over by hackers calling themselves
the "OutLaw Group". They also left a couple of
books on the site, obviously as a dig at the site
administrators, one on developing international
software, and one on administrating

OF INTEREST TO FOLKS IN CALIFORNIA
Calif. Senate passes e-mail privacy bill
The California Senate passed a bill on Tuesday
that would require employers to notify workers
if they plan to read their e-mail, track Internet
usage or use any electronic devices to track them.
The bill requires companies to give a one-time
written notice to employees that explains what
will be monitored.
