I agree with Marina, as long as your present server can meet the hardware
requirements for SBS2K3. If you're a non-profit and can meet the
requirements, check out www.techsoup.com. You can get SBS2K3 for $60.00
plus $20 for each 5-CAL pack (Device or User). Windows XP Pro Operating
system goes for $8.00/license, if your Win98 hardware is adequate for the
upgrade. MS Office 2003 Pro costs $20.00/license. All CD media is free and
Software Assurance is included with all licenses.
As to your current problem, if the hardware is the same on each "donated"
computer, you may be having intermittent issues with the network adapters.
Maybe download the latest drivers or replace the NIC in one of them and see
if that makes a difference. Bad cabling is also a possiblity. Since you
reformated and reinstalled one but still had the problem (and assuming you
have the account set up properly at the server and in Win98), it seems to
point to a hardware issue.
