The Gilat Sat Modem is assigned a static IP of 217.xxx.xxx.201 provided by
the ISP. Have been running for a few months and I always get 217.xxx.xxx.202
when I check my IP address via a website. Assume the Gilat acts as a DHCP
and allocates 217.xxx.xxx.202 to the Router.
I have now set the Linksys router to a static Internet IP of 217.xxx.xxx.202
and it seems to be happy - Internet access is still fine.
What I am not clear on is whether I use xxx.202 or xxx.201 for the mail A
record.
Also not clear if I get the ISP to enable reverse dns how it works when they
give me xxx.201 but I appear to be using xxx.202?
Also if I cannot get reverse DNS then I guess I will have to use their SMTP
server via CEICW and use Smarthost? I thought the danger of using a
smarthost was false association as a spammer?
Also going through CEICW I set up a cert called comp1.mycompany.co.uk - do I
have to set up an A record pointing this to my IP address of
217.xxx.xxx.202?
This is my first go with SBS2003 and setting this up, any help really
appreciated.
Regards
Gus

If your linksys router is setup to obtain an IP from the sat...then your IP
address could change anytime and the mail record and mx record you have are
not correct and mail will bounce
You should contact your satellite DSL (don't think its really dsl, but that
doesn' t really matter either) provider and ask if you have a static or
dynamic IP assignment
If it is dynamic then take down those mail and mx records and you will need
to register with a dynamic dns provider such as tzo.com or dyndns.org and
they will take care of your dns entries for mail server
Actually sending mail out through you ISPs email server as a "smarthost" is
a good thing. That way you don't get mail from your domain being black
listed for no reverse dns entries.

Hi I want to handle my own mail by smtp and use SBS2003 (2 NICs) I have a Satellite ADSL account. The IP apparently does not have reverse DNS lookup. Have asked ISP for info on this but so far no joy, they have given me their smtp server to use but I want to try to handle all myself if possible. Satellite Modem Gilat 360E has IP 217.xxx.xxx.201 this goes into a Linksys Router BEFSR41 (192.168.0.1) set to obtain an IP automatically from the Sat Modem and then into my External NIC Static IP (192.168.0.2). When I use www.whatismyip.com I get 217.xxx.xxx.202. I have a domain name mycompany.co.uk with the following records setup: www A 212.xxx.xxx.196 mail A 217.xxx.xxx.202 (not sure if I have the correct entry here?) ftp A 212.xxx.xxx.196 * A 212.xxx.xxx.196 MX Records: mail.mycompany.co.uk. 5 mx0.host.co.uk. 10 Appreciate some advice on what needs doing to set this up correctly. Many thanks in advance Gus
