Compact and repair db question

I am running Access 2003 on Windows Server 2003 / Windows XP SP2
workstations. I run the compact and repair option but the database does not
change size and I am left with a new file in the folder called db1, which is
a bit smaller.
Did the compact and repair fail or did it succeed and I just need to rename
the db1 file to the database?
I did not have to do this before.
