Re: Problem opening an Access file from my computer

Thank you Joan for your reply.

I don't know that we can do the front-end/back-end with Access. Ok, i was
wondering if you would be kind to give me a direction as to where i can get
information about this.

Thank you in advance

It is always recommended that you split a database. Having everyone use the
same copy of the mdb is asking for trouble.

Try splitting it. Put the backend on Fileserver - the backend contains just
the tables/relationships. The frontend would contain all other objects, and
linked tables - linked to the backend on the server.

Give each user a copy of the frontend on their workstation.

See if you still have the problem.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone here might be able to help me here. This
problem has been around for a while and i have posted it to many
forums but i still can't solve it.

I have been having troubled opening an Access file (mdb) from my
laptop. It has Microsoft Office Pro 2003 installed in it. The file
actually lives in the another computer called Fileserver. When the
file is open or being used by other users, i start to have trouble
opening it. I'm happy if it gives you a warning like you open in a
read-only mode. But it doesn't. Nothing happens when i double-click
on it.

Surprisingly, in the same scenario, i can open it using other
computers with no drama at all. I don't know if this is to do with
security or not.

Then, i did a bit of experiments there. First, i open up the access
application then go to Open file, select the same file that's on the
server, there it's open. So in my conclusion, if i can't open an
access file by using double-click, i have to run first the access
application and then open it from there onward.

But i believe there must be some logical explanation as to why i
can't open a file that's already being used by another user from my
laptop when i can do that with another computers. They both have the
same office pro version installed. I prefer to be able to just
double-click on the file to open it.

Could anyone be kind to help me get this to work?

Thank you in advance
