Counting a person's actual work days

I have this problem where the date fields are in text format, and I'm trying
to count the number of a person's work days.

Date Current Output Count Required Output Count
4/1/2005
4/1/2005
4/3/2005
4/4/2005
4/4/2005
5
3

Can I write a formula in the report to get the correct count or should I
work on this in a query.

Any assistance will be appreciated.
