Synchronise with data on USB drive

Hi there

I have a tricky client who is determined to drive me crazy. He has a
replicated database with one set of data on a 'server' pc which is
networked and a replica on his laptop which he travels with. There has
been a sorry history of data corruption problems which were eventually
solved by investing in new hardware and disabling his Hibernation
option on the laptop. They use Indirect synchronisation via
Replication Manager. All has been going well for some time.

A new issue has arisen: due to the restrictions on airline carry-on
baggage, he no longer wants to travel with his laptop. He has an
office in the US and wants to use the pc there. His plan is to put a
copy of the data onto a USB drive and use it over in the US, then bring
it back and synchronise.

I know this is fraught with problems, but wondered if there was a way
of overcoming it. I am aware that once you copy a replica it
essentially becomes a new file and results in multiple replicas leading
to a high risk of corruption - something to be avoided at all costs.

I wondered whether it would be possible to create a replica directly on
the USB drive which would then be used as the 'back-end' data for the
pc in the US - I guess this would entail using a high-spec drive with
plenty of space. There would therefore not be any copying back and
forth of data. He would then bring the usb drive back and synchronise.

Would the usb drive behave as a separate pc? In other words, could I
create a shared folder on it with a dropbox and so on as on a regular
hard-drive? Or would it be preferable to use direct synchronisation
for this? (We use Indirect because of the history of corruption, and
since it's working nicely I don't want to move away from it
altogether).

By the way, he won't touch the internet so internet sychronisation or
sync via a VPN is out of the question unfortunately.

Many thanks!

Ondine.
